Ipod nano (3rd Gen.) problem?

Ok, so I got it about 2 or 3 days ago, and I was busting my trying to figure out how to put videos and stuff on it in time for my trip, and I managed to get enough. I made sure the battery was full. But not even an hour into it, my ipod started messing up! I was watching a comedy central podcast that I got from itunes, and after I watched a few, I went to cover flow. All of the pictures were gone and when I tried to play a song and they didn't play. Then I went back to cover flow, and all the pics had a burgundy color with these pixel-looking things like a whole bunch of particles in each square. Later I took it out and saw that the screen was blank, and no matter what I did nothing happened. A couple of hours later I saw that the battery was really low and tried it again. Now it works! I was wondering what the problem was, and if I should return it because it could happen again.
