Problem with Adobe premiere pro 4 or the codecs!?

I have been trying now for a while to play movie with .avi extension which encoded in divx mpeg-4 on Adobe premiere pro4.I have downloaded and tried a few divx codecs and they seem to work when I play movie on wma.When I play movie in premiere sound gets way ahead of the time and the video doesn't work that well either.I know that problem probably is with codecs and not the software but i cant seem to find the right one.So does anyone had this problem with premiere or if you didnt what codecs did you use? Thanks in advance.
