Does a Gum Graft have to be done by a Periodontist?

My Orthodontist told me I need a gum graft before he will put braces on me. He said when he was a dentist he did the procedure many times. My dentist is telling me to go to a periodontist, but the wait is 1 year to get a consultation. I notice in my city that many Dentists advertise that they do the procedure. Has anyone out there had it done by a Dentist?? What were your results??
