New Yorkers and car seats???

I don't live in NYC but we visit there sometimes with our kids (and we sometimes take public transportation with the kids in our own area, as well). On the subway or bus, you wouldn't bring a carseat. In a cab, we, at least, would bring the carseat. It's easy for infants if they have those carriers that are both carseats and things that snap into the strollers.
